“I am because we are”
Shaping democratic art environments for social change

Theatre Forum are collaborating with Tatiana Dos Santos and Mother Tongues to deliver these one-day workshops across three locations during May. These in-person events are free and lunch will be provided but we do ask you to register (see links above for each location). Each session is limited to 25 people.
“I am because we are” describes the meaning of Ubuntu, an African philosophy that speaks to the fact that one can only grow when those around grow together. Equity and diversity are at the core of the Irish artistic community’s development strategy: the world is in constant change, and doing things differently is the path to stay in tune with those changes. Plurality means richer creativity; equity means stronger culture!
We will reflect on our roles in contributing to a greater, equal arts community and environment. In practice, we will collectively create a safe space to exchange ideas and shape actions focusing on “we” rather than “I”. The aim is to better equip artists, freelancers, arts managers, and arts workers to achieve systemic change that will foster plurality and democracy in arts work environments.
Tatiana Santos is a Racial Justice Tutor, Cultural Mediator and Socially Engaged Artist. In 2020, she completed her Masters in Dispute Resolution — her dissertation, called “New Kid on the Black: an immigrant woman of colour transforming ethnic conflicts in Ireland”, is focused on the potential of Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding to create bridges when it comes to Afrophobia. Since 2018, she has been facilitating talking circles and artistic activities to encourage equity and integration through culture and education, having worked with the Immigrant Council of Ireland, Dublin Council, CDETB and currently working as the Intercultural Network Facilitator for Artists at Mother Tongues.
