“The women among the ice”
by Agustina Munoz
“I think a man is just what he remembers about himself. I consider myself to be just what I can recall about myself” In Agustina Munoz’s “The women among the ice” themes of memory and isolation are the tip of the iceberg in local theatre company Simulacra’s production in this March 26th-29th . Three women contemplate their lives and relationships in a dreamlike setting where memory and reality meet. Lisa (Bayleigh O’Flynn), Lourdes (Naia Martinez) and Clara (Yvette Picque) have left their husbands in a scientific base in Alaska and re-account their final visions of what was once considered home. Stuck in an existential space in time, the three women reflect upon the isolation, the questions of choices and the longing the ice tundra’s have brought up. Through their memories they begin to unravel and re-imagine the peculiarities of each other’s lives on the ice and try to understand the role memory plays in building one’s identity.
Performed in a bold new staging, director Marciana Negrea invites audience members to experience the visceral elements of the play as they follow actors across two floors of the Galway Arts Centre on Dominick Street.
