Sonia Shiel | Man with a Fabelous Tail
Sonia Shiel’s ‘Man with a Fabelous Tail,’ at the Galway Arts Centre, features narrative based works and installations, made up of paintings, video and sculpture. Presented as a series of encounters between curiosities and the curious, these vitrines, while typically illustrative of evolution, propose the dangers of potential.
Sonia Shiel was born in Dublin, in 1975. Much of her work explores the propensity of art to be effective in the real world, while pitching mankind’s most earnest endeavours against their odds. She has had solo exhibitions at the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, Dublin; Kulturbunker, Frankfurt; Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, Dublin; The Black Mariah, Cork; The Royal Hibernian Academy, Gallery 1 and 2, Dublin; Butler Gallery, Kilkenny; HIAP, Helsinki; FOUR, Dublin and Ard Bia, Berlin. ‘The End of the World in Pictures,’ was commissioned by the Kulturamt Frankfurt, having received the Frankfurt Artist in Residency Program Award 2011, from Temple Bar Gallery + Studios. Recent group exhibitions include Monkey Wrench at Ormston House Gallery (Origin of the Species), AIR at Ateliers Frankfurt and Cartoon at the Silver Cloud Gallery, London. She has been the recipient of the Hennessy Craig and Tony O’Malley Awards.
