QUO VADIS-HENRYK SIENKIEWICZ FESTIVAL

12TH-17TH SEPTEMBER

www.facebook.com/QuoVadisGalway

Henryk Sienkiewicz was a novelist, journalist and Nobel Prize laureate. He is one of Poland’s most cherished writers and the country’s most celebrated. The Polish Senate has set 2016 as The Year of Henryk Sienkiewicz, a worldwide celebration marking the 100th anniversary of the writer’s passing. The year will involve hundreds of events to celebrate and pay tribute to this great writer both in Poland and around the world. Galway City will become part of the international celebrations, the only Irish city to do so, hosting a number of events over seven days to pay tribute to the great writer. All events are free and all the public are welcome to attend.
Want to be transported into a jungle experience? From Monday 12th until Saturday 17th of September, Nun’s Island Theatre will be transformed into a wild dessert and jungle environment for children to experience. In Desert and Wilderness was one of Sienkiewicz’s most celebrated novels for young people, an adventure across the deserts and jungles of Africa. The theatre will create an environment for children to experience some elements of the book and learn about the author in a fun and interactive environment. Pre booking is advised for big groups by calling 0862016339. Opening times 11am-5pm Monday to Saturday. Culture night open until 8.30pm.
On Friday 16th an outdoor film screening of the legendary With Fire and Sword will take place at the Galway City Museum Spanish Arch at 9pm. An action packed thriller which chronicles the nobility of 17th Century Poland and the era of the partitions of Poland. Warm clothes are advised with a festive picnic-style atmosphere expected! This will be presented as part of the Culture Night programme of events.
On Friday 16th there will also be the unveiling of a new Galway City mural created by local artist Finbar 247.  Finbar 247’s piece is influenced and inspired by Sienkiewicz’s writing and is a celebration of Polish culture in an Irish context. A small reception event will take place at the mural on Culture Night to mark the occasion at 7.30pm. On Saturdays 10th and 17th of September at 1pm, Galway City Library will host public readings of Sienkiewicz’s novels for children for public. This is a family friendly event with children of all ages invited to attend. The Library will also be hosting an exhibition of Polish illustrators for the entire week.

All events are free and are being organised by the Bardzo Ladnie Foundation. The foundation was established in Poland in 2014 as a not-for-profit organisation which aims to celebrate Polish culture, traditions and art, and moved to Galway in 2015. All events are proudly supported by Galway City Council, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Dublin and the Polish Government.
