Clare Langan
Metamorphosis concerns the relationship between man and the forces of nature. A wintertime, cold beauty, solitude and abandonment – feelings of anxiety underpin what the viewer is looking at, is it the future, is it Nature’s victory. Langan examines a disharmony between humanity and nature, and proposes a memory far into the future, challenging humankind’s understanding and assumptions of a harmonious parallel trajectory of Nature’s intent. The nature of the beauty of the images serves only to disconcert.
Clare Langan has exhibited worldwide, including most recently representing Ireland at Sounds and Visions, Art Film and Video from Europe, Museum of Modern Art, Tel Aviv (February 2009). In 2008 Metamorphosis was exhibited in the Singapore Biennial (2008), curated by Fumio Nanjo, won the Principle Prize at the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, Germany and was exhibited at the Lyon Biennale; Houldsworth Gallery, London; Loop, Barcelona; NCA Gallery, Tokyo; Pratt Art Gallery New York and the Miguel Marcos Gallery, Barcelona.
Langan’s presented A Film Trilogy (2003) at MoMA in New York and at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin. She represented Ireland in the 25th Biennale de Sao Paulo (2002), Brazil with Too dark for night. The entire trilogy was exhibited at The International 2002, Tate Liverpool, The Liverpool Biennial. She participated in the Glen Dimplex Artists’ Award 2000, Irish Museum of Modern Art.
