June 16 is Bloomsday, the date on which the events of James Joyce’s Ulysses take place, with many of those events centering around Leopold Bloom.
To mark Bloomsday in Galway, Galway Arts Centre will present a lecture on Leopold Bloom by Prof Brian Arkins, entitled ‘The Prototypes of Joyce’s Character, Leopold Bloom’. The lecture is on Friday June 16 at 6pm.
Brian Arkins is a Professor Emeritus of Classics at the University of Galway. He was educated at Clongowes Wood College and at University College Dublin, where he obtained an M.A. in Classics and a Ph.D in Latin. He is the author of 12 books of criticism. These include Sexuality in Catullus, The Thought of W.B. Yeats, and, Death and Marriage: Greek and Roman Drama. He is also the author of a poetry collection, Towards a Credo.
